The IBM 5162 - The AT in an XT Box

I have never seen one of these, so I can only say from specs I have read and pictures I have seen, that it is simply a XT upgraded to accept a 286 processor with a few new features thrown in. Kind of like a Mustang LX 5.0, all the dash without the flash. Alot of the specs seem to emulate the 5170 PC/AT, except that the AT has a different case and Power and HDD LED's

Released in the Fall of 1986 2 years after the AT came out, this machine seems like an attempt to try to revamp an old product with new technology. This is also when the updated original XT was released, with support for 3.5" Drive, 101-key keyboard and 640k max. Ram motherboard but stuck with the original XT 8-bit bus, 8088 processor, and everything else that was included with the original in 1983. But the IBM 5162 was different all-together from the 5160, in that it used the 16 bit bus from the AT, 286 processor and high-density 5.25" disk drive.

IBM 5162 PC XT/286 Stock Specifications

It seems to me like a bit of a sleeper, if you use some car talk. It has a case that looks exactly like an IBM PC or XT, but it has all the features the AT offered and actually came with 640k RAM standard whereas the original AT's only came with 256k or 512k.

I think if I could find one of these, I would probably buy it because it was probably not as common as all the other machines because of competition from other companies and the fact that IBM was stopping production of both the XT and AT to make way for the much more modern PS/2 models.
