The IBM 4860 - The PCjr

IBM PCjr Model 4860

Designed as a low-cost computer that anyone could afford, it was also very small in size and weight compared to the IBM PC and XT of the day. It cost between $1000-2000 which made it much cheaper than buying an XT or PC but with the decreased cost came less upgradeability and functionality. But they still could do many things that computers in the same price range for the year could not do.

Several of the different features of the PCjr included a wireless keyboard that operated on batteries, an external AC adapter to power the computer and the equivalent of expansion slots were called "sidecars". There was only one of these and it was used to upgrade system memory to a maximum of 512k. There were 2 cartridge slots for ROM and something else called PCjr I/O connectors for connecting standard and optional features. There was only one drive bay for the floppy drive included with the machine and is doesn't look like a HDD can be installed because of this fact.

I have found out a bit more about this machine, including the fact that a conventional 8087 math co-processor cannot be installed because the slot is used for a sound chip. The RS232 serial is not the standard one you would expect and to make it standard, a special adapter was required. Also, I have learned that since the motherboard is essentially a stripped down one from the PC, it can support a Hard Disk Drive but the question is where to install it at and where to plug it into an expansion slot!? It was a machine that didn't catch on like the Apple II's, Commodore 64's and Tandy TRS-80's of the day.
