Supersoft/Landmark Diagnostic ROMs for IBM 5150/5155/5160/5170

Source: The ROMs were supplied by Chuck(G) at the VCF

IBM 5150

In an IBM 5150, socket U33 is where the Supersoft/Landmark ROM needs to be placed.

To use a 27xxx series EPROM (e.g. 2764/27128/27256/27512) in socket U33, you will require a suitable adapter (adapter details).

U33 image for a 27128 EPROM (or 27C128) in a MK36C25/27128 adapter ( or in 2364/27128 adapter )
U33 image for a 27256 EPROM (or 27C256) in a MK36C25/27256 adapter ( or in 2364/27256 adapter )
U33 image for a 27512 EPROM (or 27C512) in a MK36C25/27512 adapter ( or in 2364/27512 adapter )

Notes:

1. Requires a CGA or MDA/MGA video card. Not designed for EGA - EGA will display, but poorly.
2. If no keyboard is connected, clicks will be heard from the 5150 motherboard relay during the KEYBOARD CONTROLLER test.
3. If no floppy card is present, clicks will be heard from the 5150 motherboard relay during the FLOPPY CONTROLLER test.
4. U28 ROM test always fails (because there's nothing in the U28 socket).
5. The NONMASKABLE INTERRUPT test will fail if the math coprocessor (8087) is absent AND you have switch 2 on SW1 in the wrong position for that (off).

IBM 5155

The IBM 5155 contains an early version of the 5160 motherboard. Refer to the IBM 5160 section below.

IBM 5160

In an IBM 5160, socket U18 is where the Supersoft/Landmark ROM needs to be placed.

The 5160 requires an EPROM of type 27256 (or 27C256).
The above 27256 image for the 5150 is also suitable for the 5160.
Burn it to a 27256 (or 27C256) EPROM and place the EPROM in socket U18.

Notes:

1. Requires a CGA or MDA/MGA video card. Not designed for EGA - EGA will display, but poorly.
2. The second test will display "U33 SUPERSOFT ROM CHECKSUM" even though the ROM is in socket U18.
3. The NONMASKABLE INTERRUPT test will fail if the math coprocessor (8087) is absent AND you have switch 2 on SW1 in the wrong position for that (off).
4. Other references to chips are for the corresponding chip on a 5150 motherboard. From that you may think that the ROM is actually for a 5150, but later in the tests, the settings of switches are shown, and for that, there are areas labelled "PC SW1", "PC SW2" and "XT SW1".

IBM 5170

In an IBM 5170, sockets U27 and U47 are where the two Supersoft/Landmark ROMs needs to be placed.

The 5170 requires EPROMs of type 27256 (or 27C256), rated at 150 ns or faster.

Notes:

1. There is a 20 second delay before video is seen.
2. Requires a CGA or MDA/MGA video card. Not designed for EGA - EGA will display, but poorly.
3. Does not output POST codes to port 80h.
